Community Service The Hampshire Regional School Committee has instituted a graduation requirement for 30 hours of community service, 15 hours in social science classes and 15 hours during the junior year. The goals of this requirement are to promote caring, contributing citizens; to make abstract knowledge relevant; and to contribute something of value to the greater Hampshire Regional community.
Students will benefit in many ways, because community service gives them opportunities to make decisions and plan in advance; it requires skills that relate directly to the skills needed for the work place; and it teaches personal, social, and civic responsibility. These are important values as our young people prepare to graduate from high school, and your support can help.
The grade 9 community service requirement is part of a student?s social studies curriculum. Details and information should be obtained through the individual?s social studies teacher. After grade 9, the community service requirement is completed as an independent study project. Questions and comments should be addressed to the coordinators, Virginia Elliott and Mark Cavallon.
