Summer School Guidelines


What Can Parents Do To DiscourageDrug/Alcohol Use?

1. Know who your child?s friends are.Know where your child is spending his/her free time. Know what yourchild is doing during his free time.

2. Eat together as a family.

3. Listen to your child. Try tounderstand his/her point of view. Don?t talk at them, but with them.

4. Respond appropriately. Don?tridicule, give too much advice, or take an all-knowing position.

5. Offer guidance. Let your child knowthat there are many solutions to solve a problem.

6. Be a role model. Display responsibledrinking habits and do not use illegal drugs.

7. Set family rules and stick to them.Kids need rules that are clear, consistent, reasonable, and enforced.

8. Encourage family activities. Helpyour child find healthy and creative alternatives to drug use. Shut offthe television.

9. Build self-esteem. Children who feelpositive about themselves are less likely to use drugs. Praise yourchild.

10. Give your child responsibility.

11. Be knowledgeable about the effectsof drugs and alcohol.

12. Be aware of the current youth drugscene in your community.

13. Learn to recognize signs of drugand alcohol use.

14. Give your children time andattention.
