Internet Safety

Internet Safety

In addition to useful and educational information, the internet contains content and resources that are inappropriate for children. The internet has also become a place for criminal activity, including cyber-bullying to harass others, as well as on-line predators seeking to gain access to children.

Recent surveys indicate an ever-growing risk to the problems that exist on the internet. One internet safety organization reported (source: i-SAFE):

* Of 20,000 middle school students 40% visited an inappropriate place on the Internet.

* Of 20,000 students, 10% were asked by someone they met on the Internet to meet face to face. 10% of them actually met a new person from the Internet face to face (2,000 were asked to meet and 200 actually met someone!)

* 24% saw nothing wrong with chatting with a stranger on the internet and 39% trusted those with whom they chatted.

* 58 % of students have not told their parents or another adult about someone being mean or hurtful to them online.
