HAMPSHIRE REGIONAL PTSO PARENTS, TEACHERS & STUDENTS WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER SCHOOL
Hampshire Regional PTSO Parents, Teachers and Students Working Together for a Better School
MEETING MINUTES --June 16, 2010 Meeting called to order at 5:45 pm. Present were: Virginia Elliott, Ellen Batchelder, John Zimmerman, Susan Hale, Mackenzie Hale, Susan Davidson, Grace Davidson, Jim Rigali, Karen Kubasek, and Karen Henell.
The Secretary's and Treasurer's reports were read and accepted.
Susan Hale reported on the June 2 Senior Awards Night, when she presented the PTSO scholarships to Bailly Morse and Jamison Wickman. Ginger shared copies of the essays that were submitted and a thank you letter that was received from one of the recipients. Criteria for the 2011 scholarship will be discussed at our September meeting.
Jim Rigali brought information about the NetSmartz internet safety mentoring program that is presented through the Northwestern District Attorney's Office. HRHS students have participated as mentors for students at the Norris School. We discussed making a donation to the program, but this was questioned because the program is only offered at Norris. Jim will do some more research and bring it to our September meeting.
Important dates for 2010-11 were finalized. The grade 7 potluck dinner will take place on Wednesday, November 10. The high school coffeehouse will occur on Friday, April 1, and we will share the cost of police with the middle school dance that is also taking place that night. The PTSO meeting schedule will change from the third to the second Wednesday of each month, September through June.
In other business, Sue Davidson spoke to us in her role as producer of "The Wizard of Oz". She thanked the PTSO for obtaining cultural grants to help support all three of the HRHS musical productions and reported that she is looking for increased parental support of this growing program. Each show has been more technically challenging than the last and has used a larger cast. This year, for example, there was a cast of 60 and over 200 costumes.
A review of this year's successes included the high school coffeehouse held in November, the awarding of scholarships to the class of 2010, the popularTeacher Treat Day, and the fact that we sold out of our calendars for the first time. Some challenges were that we did not have student participation in the PTSO this year, we would like to have more teacher participation, and only one team teacher attended the 7th grade potluck. An idea was suggested to ask teachers and students to sign up for PTSO meetings one month at a time. It was also suggested that the PTSO might sponsor a competition among the seventh grade teams to "show your spirit" at the 2010 potluck.
Finally, outgoing treasurer Karen Henell was thanked for her five years of smart and energetic service, and in particular for obtaining the initial grants that provided seed money for the high school musicals. Hers will be difficult shoes to fill, but Ellen Batchelder is willing to try. Because of this, we will need to find someone else to organize next year's potluck and the 2011-12 calendar.
This meeting was adjourned at 7:15.
